We’re still on a high from having played host to a really exciting - not to mention unusual - guest at the hotel – the Olympic flame!
We were thrilled to be chosen from all the hotels in York to house the flame for the night it was in the city, along with the 230 torch relay organisers and sponsors who were accompanying it last week.
Our VIPs started to arrive on Saturday 16th in preparation for the York leg of the torch relay, which arrived on Tuesday 19th and left the following day.
The flame was kept in a lantern overnight, following a full risk assessment. We had to keep the whole thing under wraps because of the huge security issues surrounding the whole event, but now we’re delighted to be able to share it with everyone finally!
It was a great welcome for our new General Manager Sally Hughes, who got to hold the Olympic Torch during her first week in post.
“There’s a very select group of hotel managers who can boast they have held the torch and been able to host the Olympic flame for a night – and I’m thrilled to be one of them.
"It certainly made for a very memorable start to my career in York, that’s for sure!” she said.
We also had the Coca Cola and Sainsbury’s official sponsor vehicles in our carpark, and waved the official tour bus off from here on the Wednesday morning.
All of our staff were delighted to have played their part in this special and historic visit, and we all have some wonderful memories of the event. We can’t wait for the Olympics to start now – what a fabulous build up!
