Carol Ward, our marketing co-ordinator, had a really interesting afternoon this week spending some time with pupils at Huntington School, helping to give them a flavour of what it’s like to work at a busy hotel.
Carol was one of a number of different professionals invited along to speak to the students at the event, which aimed to get the young people thinking about a whole range of careers that they might not have considered before.
“I was involved in some quick fire sessions with groups of around eight to ten students at a time. They had to ask questions which would help them guess what your job was, and then they went on to find out what the role entailed, and what qualifications they would need to have,” she explained.
“It was really enjoyable, and great for me to see so many young people getting enthusiastic about a career in the hospitality industry.”
The school already has links with the Park Inn, having arranged a number of visits to tour the hotel and find out about the range of different roles involved in running a busy city centre hotel as part of their business studies.
Nicky Wilson, head of business at the school, thanked all the professionals for taking part, and said there had been lots of positive feedback from the students.
“The afternoon went very well, there was a lovely atmosphere in the room and the students were all very interested in what was being said.
“Our aim was that the students should find out about a variety of careers and that they will find out more information for the choices they need to make in a year’s time.
“We believe the event helped them to raise their aspirations and to realise that there are many more careers for them to explore,” she added.
We really have enjoyed all the events we’ve been involved in with the students from Huntington, and are already looking forward to the next opportunity we have to work with them.
